Determining when to use preterite or imperfect in Spanish?

I have a test tomorrow and I have to determine when to use the imperfect and when to use the preterite. We are given a story and asked to fill in the blanks with either the preterite or imperfect conjugation of the verb. Can someone help and give me some rules or pointers? Thanks.
