In Shakespear's Macbeth, why is Macbeth crowned King and not Banquo?

Macbeth and Banquo are kinda both from the same nobility, and they are both close to the King. (Duncan) So why is it that Macbeth gets to become King after Duncan's death, and not Banquo? Is it because Macbeth is both Thane of Glamist and Cawdor?
