Affordable, safe, and nice area's of Toronto?

In your opinion or knowledge for a student what area of Toronto is relatively cheap in price, safe, and nice. I'm moving from Winnipeg where crime is something I'm quite used to so I'm not too safe savey. Although, not a gang area like Jane & Finch. My price range for Toronto would probably be somewhere between $550-$1000 for rent. Thank you for your answers!
